Should I buy this PURPLE El Camino and sell my BMW? I really want something that can haul bikes and stuff better. But I also don’t like driving a truck. Ute is the obvious answer.

It’s a good Idea.

If it’s not rusted and the motor and trans check out, it’s a fine idea. Check the door bottoms and the rear quarters and rear frame rails for rust. Also check the driver and passenger floors for rust. Also check the smugglers box (behind the front seats) for rust.
It looks like it’s on old springs and sagging. Think about the cost of replacing the suspension. You can probably do everything for about $500 and have a nice riding truck. I put airbags in the rear springs which can be inflated more for a load. Also a big rear sway flattens everything out.
Mine was $6500 with fresher paint, buckets and a low mileage 350, just for reference.

No! It is a very good idea

Yeah 6-8k seems to be the going rate for a nice one. There’s a two tone brown/tan one for 6k that I like as well but I think that’s more than I’m willing to spend.
My biggest problem is that most of the G body elCos have the 305 and an auto trans(actually I think they are all auto form the factory) and that seems like a slow and boring ride. So this one already having a new 5.7 is nice.

Just don’t drive it around this guy

You came to the right place. This is a great idea.

What Sovande said. I’ve found mine to be pretty easy to work on, and parts aren’t too pricey. The only downside is the same as any old car - 40 year old bolts and bushings can be very reluctant to come out! I recently replaced the control arm bushings on mine and it took a shop press to do the job. You’re in Wisconsin, right? Since it’s light in the rear, it will have crappy traction in snowy weather - but that’s true of any truck. Definitely check it out for rust underneath. With all that said - I’d never dissuade someone from getting an El Camino. :)

I can’t remember if you could get a manual in a 5th gen or not. I don’t think I’d want a manual in mine. The three speed auto I have is fine. I can do a one tire fire until the rubber is all gone and also cruise at 60 at about 2100 rpms.
Ask what rear end it has. I have the 3.08 but they also used the highway gears and possibly a 3.77. If you wanted to spend a bit more money I'd sell you mine.

Yes you should buy it. You should also keep asking rhetorical questions on the internet.

The rear gear in my 84 from the factory had .....wait for it....a 2.42 ratio . When I found that out I was shocked. Swapped those for 3.73 and wish I had gone with something in the 3.23 range. If you can find one with a 700- R4 or 200- 4R, that'd be the best option.

Watch for rust on the back of the frame rails, but I think this is a capital idea!

I have been pretty happy with the 3.08. Its plenty for the city and not bad on the highway. More gear would be fun though.

You could get a manual in 78-81s (when they were still called A-bodies, not Gs). 3spd for the V6, 4spd for the 305/350.

You could get a 4 speed through 81. My 79 is a 4 speed with buckets and air from the factory. It is a 305, but it’s still fun. :)

I had an 84' G body with a factory 305 (that I replaced with a mild 350 crate) and crappy TH250C- 3spd.

I want to eventually get a five (or six!) speed for mine to drop the RPMs on the highway. Might try to go to 3.23’s for a little more grunt on the low end.
